The Prince of William Set for Cop30 in South America

The Prince of Wales will attend the important UN climate summit in Brazil next month, however the PM's participation remains unconfirmed.

Prince William is set to award the Earthshot prize and attend the meeting of officials from over 190 nations in the Brazilian city.

Climate Specialists Welcome Royal Participation

Sustainability leaders welcomed the royal's presence. A sustainability expert commented that it would lift what is anticipated to be a complex meeting, where international agreement on updated targets for lowering carbon emissions is required.

"Does the Prince's presence at the summit a stunt? Yes. But that doesn't mean it's a poor decision," she said. "The summit has historically been as much about so-called 'optics' as it is about discussions. The Prince's announcement will almost certainly inspire other delegates to engage, and will capture worldwide attention."

"It's likely the Prince understands clearly that by participating, he'll bring numerous of eyes to the summit. In an period when climate impacts are increasing, but press attention is dropping, any action that raises awareness should be celebrated."

Monarch's Attendance at Past Cops

King Charles has participated in previous climate conferences, but is not participate in the upcoming event.

An expert from a climate research unit commented: "All hands on deck – and any high-profile figure like Prince William, in attendance assisting advocate for the challenging work that is required, is likely a good thing."

"The monarch] was in his previous role when he attended Cop26 and helped to motivate negotiations. I don't think it always needs the two royals to participate."

Prime Minister's Attendance Still Uncertain

The PM has yet to announce if they will attend the conference, to which every global leaders are invited, with numerous planning to join. He was heavily criticised by prominent sustainability leaders for seeming hesitant on the decision earlier this month.

"International representatives should be in the summit location for Cop30. Attendance is not optional, it is a demonstration of responsibility. This is the moment to establish more ambitious national commitments and the resources to deliver them, especially for adaptation" to the impacts of the environmental emergency.
